I Passed The Thesis Proposal Defense!

I did it! The committee passed my proposal and now I have the green light to go ahead with my thesis (with amendments, of course).

Basically, the proposal was done well enough for me to proceed.

One of them even joked before the defense started that they will grill me, if not it won't be any fun (!?!)

Fun? Is that it?

I was basically a BUNDLE OF NERVES NICELY WRAPPED IN ANXIETY!

A lot of things transpired.

I'm going to give you a step-by-step runthrough of the defense.

So...

Place: Park School of Communications Dean's Conference Room
Date: August 15, 2006
Time: 10:30am - 12:00pm (ON TIME, ON TARGET)

1. My thesis adviser spoke and introduced me.

2. I spoke, presented, fumbled a couple of times, picked myself up.

3. I sat down and SMILED.

4. Grilling starts
  • Run me through the methodology and show me how it works
  • How do you ensure the participants don't give you only the "good" answers?
  • Are you assuming that there's only positive outcomes from social interaction? What about the negative ones?
  • What is the impact of the event on your study? Why do you have it?

(Thank God these are questions I can answer, and for those I am unsure, they have good comments)

5. Some recommendations

  • Conduct a practice run for the interview and amend questions accordingly.
  • Conduct a mental screening
  • Provide a selection/rejection protocol

6. Other comments

  • This seems more like a dissertation than a thesis (I was SUPER DUPER PETRIFIED)
  • The explanation was great and I am able to follow you closely as to what you set out to achieve
  • Excellent literature review
  • Great structure

7. Committee deliberation

This took 20 whole minutes.... Seriously I was literally shaking...

8. Decision

GREEN LIGHT!

PRAISE THE LORD FOR HE IS GOOD!

Now, onto HSR, which has to be done in 3 days...

Am I superhuman or what!

Haha....

Anyway, I'm just super-happy now :)

AUGUST 15

Yup, date change. One member couldn't make it.

So one day earlier before dooms day...

Hope for no more changes!
